Zoethoutgras

Liquorice grass makes its first impression through scent. Brush or gently crush a leaf of Acorus gramineus ‘Licorice’ and a sweet fragrance recalling liquorice and anise is released. Despite its grassy appearance, this evergreen perennial belongs to the sweet-flag family. Narrow leaves rise in flat fans, forming a low clump with a clean, architectural shape.

Its foliage reaches about 30 cm and the plant gradually increases through underground rhizomes. It suits a moist container, a damp border or a sensory garden where the scent can be appreciated close at hand. The narrow leaves provide a useful contrast to broad-leaved plants without relying on conspicuous flowers.

Plant in spring or autumn in sun or partial shade, in soil that stays consistently moist. A container must not be allowed to dry out: brown leaf tips are a sign to review watering. Shelter young autumn plantings from severe, exposed frost. This is an aromatic foliage plant, distinct from true liquorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra.
